An inventory of this site, written the way this company writes inventories
What a visit to this site involves, listed item by item
SCARLETGENT LTD writes inventories for a living, so it would be a poor advertisement to run a site whose own workings were a mystery. This page is that inventory: the files, the one script and its jobs, where the two sheets keep their figures, and the requests a page load makes.
What the site is made of
-
Seven pages
Plain HTML files, served exactly as they were written. Every link on this site points at another page of this site.
-
One stylesheet
A single file, styles.css, shared by all seven pages.
-
One script
report.js, whose four jobs are listed in the next section.
-
Four images
Two illustrations, both credited as illustrations on the page that carries them, and two small icons for the browser tab.
The four jobs of the one script
- It builds the index slab on the front page from the list of entries held inside it, and stamps each panel’s numeral from that same list, so the two always agree.
- It folds the page tree away behind the breadcrumb and gives the breadcrumb a button to open it again.
- It works the arithmetic for the two sheets on the front page as the figures in them change.
- It redraws the cabinet elevation when the button under it is pressed.
With the script switched off, each of those four is already in place in the markup: the slab is written out, the tree is open as a nested list, both sheets show a worked example, and the elevation stands finished.
Where the figures you type stay
The port-count sheet and the coverage sheet are arithmetic performed by the page itself. A figure typed into one of them is read by the script running in your own browser, multiplied or divided, and drawn straight back into the page a few lines below. It lives in that tab’s memory for as long as the tab is open, and closing the tab is the end of it. The sheets have no submit button and the pages carry no form that posts anywhere.
The requests a page load makes
Opening a page fetches the files above from the host that serves this domain. As with any web server, that host keeps its own log of the requests it answers, which ordinarily includes the address asking, the time, the page wanted and the browser identifying itself.
One further request goes elsewhere. The pages are set in two typefaces, Archivo and Source Serif 4, and they are fetched from Google’s font service at fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. That request is made by your browser directly to Google and is visible to Google on the same terms as any other request your browser makes. It is the only thing on this site that reaches a third party, and it is listed here because an inventory that leaves out the one awkward line is not an inventory.
Writing to the company
The one address published anywhere on this site is hello@scarletgent.buzz. A message sent to it is held in that mailbox and read there. The registered facts behind the name — company number 17408135, D-U-N-S 235088142, and the registered office at 66 Paul Street — are set out in full on their own page, so that the details anyone might want to check sit in one findable place.
